I found out about Holodrum from The Quietus, a place with a very pretentious reputation. What a surprise then, that they gave a glowing if typically dense review to such an unpretentious album. They call it a high watermark of sincerity, but I call it LCD Soundsystem with less old man whining. Every track feels like it hits the perfect mix between being musically sophisticated and danceable, with an overall effect like an expanded and modernized version of the best tracks from the best 80s bands. It’s probably gonna slip through the cracks, it’s not making it on any year-end lists I don’t think, but Holodrum’s self-titled album is worth listening to to see if you vibe with it.
